  7. Know what's pretty funny? I'm guessing there's one person in this discussion who actually trained, deployed, patrolled, and operated with sniper scouts in an actual combat theatre. I'm guessing only one of us operated as a squad designated marksman.

Ooh you got me, I'm on crutches recovering from knee surgery, due to an injury incurred while deployed, so yeah...not riding at the moment.

    Hello Evan.

  10. “The incident was found not to be racially motivated, and the Marines depicted later acknowledged the symbol could be misinterpreted and ‘is not in keeping with our Marine Corps ethos and values,’ said Lt. Col. Stewart Upton, a Marine spokesman. The Marines’ chain of command determined that disciplinary action was not warranted. They were ordered not to use the symbol anymore, and told that further use of it could result in punishment.”

    Lighten up, Francis.

    1. As a fellow vet, I'm positive you are very familiar with the practice of upper brass sweeping just about anything under the rug to avoid making their unit or branch look bad by association. I don't for a second believe that the company commander didn't know exactly which symbol was on that flag, and playing dumb by claiming they thought it was just a two s design is ridiculous.

  11. Thought you might like an intelligent, informed opinion as opposed to a reactionary, emotional one: “As an African American/Black Female, I do not think these Marines were trying to deliver a message of power, racism and hatred. As I stare at this picture I see a group of men, [M]arines, snipers trying to capture a moment of unity and brotherhood. The details in this picture that I see which stand out the most is, no one is throwing up any group gang / hand signs that normally compliment bold messages of racism. Heck, even Hitler through [sic] up racist/power hand signals to ensure everyone clearly knew what his beliefs were. Also, notice there is no leader in the picture. No one is trying to stand out as the “racist group” leader. Normally when you see group pictures of folks trying to sell others on how racist they are, there is always a standout frontman that delivers that message very well through his/her body language. What I also notice is that these are Marines and Snipers and they are posing very humbly. No one looks “hardcore and evil”. I see no sign of arrogance and no one seems to be posing in a position of violence or authority. I don’t see any noose or dead victims in the picture with these Marines celebrating their death. I am going to go out on a limb and say that even though this flag and symbol is of poor choice, the meaning of these things have evolved and changed through generations and generations thereafter."

I busted my knuckles fightin boneheads growing up. I was a greaser and all my friends SHARPs. I am also a former 1st Recon Bn. Marine (0321) you are wrong and owe my Brothers an apology. Not that I expect one.

    1. I'm not sure the commentary above is very insightful to the photo and situation in question. That aside, I too grew up beating up bigots of all sorts and was friends with many anti-racist skinheads. For me that didn't stop when I enlisted. Peers, leadership, and subordinates alike, were all treated the same when it came to being held to a high standard of moral integrity. No one intelligent enough to calculate long distance ballistics can reasonably claim ignorance in using the symbol of the nazi's elite shock troops as a unit symbol. My sympathies go out to any marines shamed by their association to the idiots in that disgraceful portrait. I offer no apology for expressing my rage at the use of fascist bigoted symbology to represent our country at war.
